Paulsen Statement on Approval of Meningitis B Vaccine

Statement

Date: Jan. 26, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-03) released the following statement on the approval of Bexsero, a Meningitis B vaccine, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) must still make a recommendation on usage before the vaccine will be widely available.

"The approval of this life-saving vaccine is very good news, but long overdue. We are finally catching up to 34 other countries who already approved Bexsero to protect their students and families from the deadly Meningitis B bacteria. Now the CDC needs to take action and make the vaccine widely available in order to avoid any more unnecessary deaths from this preventable disease."

Congressman Paulsen has previously written guest columns in the Minneapolis Star Tribune and The Hill encouraging approval of Bexsero. In addition, Paulsen traveled to Canada with Alicia Stillman -- who lost her daughter, Emily, to Meningitis B -- in order to receive the vaccine.
